PUKEITI RHODODENDRON TRUST
Sir, —Unfortunately, the wishes of your correspondents to have a local full collection are impossible. Most of the best rhododendrons are alpine shrubs and need constant rainfall. They grow from 4000 ft to 1200 ft in the Himalayas. Christchurch has only 30 inches a year and droughts. Pukeiti has over 200 inches, well spread. They thrive best in partial shade in an acid volcanic soil, with plenty of humus and good drainage. The site was selected as a national reserve for them by Mr Douglas Cook, of Gisborne, an expert, who gave the first lanci; £21.000 has already been given in money and labour. '1 ney have a fine lodge, curator s house, and glass-house. New Zealanders are great travellers and the site it on the main road, railway and air route to Rotorua and Auckland. Yours, etc., June 28, 1956.
E. A. BARTON.
