SHEARERS’ WAGES

Sir, —Congratulations to the Banks Peninsula branch of Federated Farmers for holding a meeting to discuss the price of shearing. I trust other branches w’ill do likewise. Shearing is no harder work than the shearer cares to make it. but becomes hard when a ICO-a-day man tries to do 150 and much harder for the sheep. If shearing is worth £6 a hundred, why not make that the award and let all abide by it? No other worker gets double the award pay regardless of ability, and as I have noticed, the higher the pay the rougher the job. as each shearer tries to get all the sheep he can out of the higher-paying sheds. The present award of £3 8s plus another £1 for good workmanship would put the shearer’s award on a similar basis with other awards. —Yours, etc., EX-SHEARER. June 28, 1956.
