AUCKLAND CHOICE REAFFIRMED MOVE TO HOBSON BAY DISCUSSED “The Press’ Special Service AUCKLAND, June 28. After a discussion in committee lasting for more than two hours, the Auckland University College Council approved, subject to certain amendments, a case for removing the college from its present site to Hobson Bay. This was included in a memorandum from the new buildings committee and will be presented to the joint committee determining priorities for Auckland works, with a view to obtaining an early decision on the site. The outcome of the special meeting held to consider the memorandum was announced by the president of the council (Mr W. H. Cocker) after the meeting. He said a sub-committee consisting of himself, the principal (Mr K. J. Maidment) and Dr. R. G. McElroy was appointed to incorporate the amendments in a final draft which would be considered at the next meeting of the council. The council affirmed its approval of Hobson Bay as the future site of the college in May after a motion to a special meeting to retain the college on the present site was lost. It also approved of the preparation by Mr W. G. Boswell, former City Valuer, of an assessment of the cost of acquiring properties in the Princes street area for development with the present site. The contents of the memorandum and the nature of the proposed amendments were not revealed. However, before the meeting went into committee Mr Cocker said the memorandum was in several parts. The report of the committee included the valuations made by Mr Boswell, a memorandum by Professor A. C. Light, professor of design in the architecture department, and the plan tentatively approved by the council. There was also a separate memorandum prepared by the Fletcher organisation for submission with the council case.
