Markets Active And Buoyant At Close

Share turnover recorded yesterday by the Christchurch Stock Exchange was the biggest this week, though not so well spread as on other days.

* A.N.Z. Bank and Bank of N.S.W. were firmer, and N.Z. Befrigcrating confirmed recent firmer quotations in business at 30s 4d and 30s 9d. Electrolytic Zinc preference, in first Christchurch business for two weeks, reflected the stronger tone of the Australian market in a sale at 355. Woolworths N.Z. Properties preference, Tip Top Ice and Whakatane each made modest gams. Of three reported sales of Colonial Sugar, two were made at Thursday’s higher price of £32 5s and one at £32 2s 6d. Mt. Lyell also eased in heavy business at 21s 9d. Farmers’ Co-operative rights to the ordinary issue dropped back to 3s but the B preference sold unaltered at 2s 10d. N.Z. SHARE TRANSACTIONS

Customs and excise duty collected by the Customs Department in Christchurch during June totalled £315.262. compared with £376,939 in June. 1955. Sales tax also decreased over the figures for June last year. In the first three months ot the financial vear the total was £1.934,318. compared with £2.079.925 for the corresponding period last year.
