SAVINGS BANK DEPOSITS

RECORD IN MAY (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 22. Post Office Savings Bank figures for the first half of June show that deposits exceeded withdrawals by £650,000. The Postmaster-General (Mr T. P. Shand) said today that there was bound to be some falling-off this month, as some money would be withdrawn for investment in the Government loan now on the market The Minister said the figures for May were even more satisfactory than the provisional returns disclosed. Deposits for that month, at £12.668.802. were £1.732.808 more than those for May last year. Withdrawals, at £10.438,290, were only £90,454 more than those for the corresponding month last year. The result was that there was an excess of deposits of £2.229.512, compared with an excess of £587.158 in May, 1955.

Deposits for May were the highest ever recorded for one month, said Mr Shand.
