SUNDAY BUS SERVICES
AUTHORITY GRANTS REDUCTION APPLICATION ON WORK HOURS DECLINED. The Christchurch Transport Board’s application for a reduction in its Sunday services has been granted by the Christchurch Metropolitan Licensing Authority. The board’s application for an amendment in the hours of work for bus drivers on race days and show days has been declined. In permitting reduced. Sunday services, particularly in the mornings, the authority said that it did so on the understanding that if the board met a demand on its new schedule which it could not cope with, it would make a further application to the authority.
Declining the board’s application for authority to work up to 15 drives on race and show days up to a spreadover period of 15 hours, the authority gave the following grounds:— “As the application was based purely on economic grounds it should not take precedence over public safety. The board has an alternative method available.
The board has at present student drivers who can be used for race traffic. The position could be further reviewed if and when student drivers are no longer available.
“The provision for the granting of exemptions under Section 30 (1) (c) of Transport Licensing Regulations. 1950, was provided to meet cases of emergency and not so as to reduce regularly the 10-hour consecutive rest period of drivers of a public passenger transport service.”
