HOUSING PROBLEMS
CHURCHES MAY COMBINE FOR ACTION
Combined action on housing problems by several churches may result from a meeting held on Thursday evening by the public and socia’ affairs committee of the Diocese of Christchurch..
The committee last year submitted a report on housing to the Diocesan Synod, which resolved that the report be sent to the Christchurch City Council. Since then the committee has continued to study the matter, says a supplied report.
Representatives of the Methodist. Baptist, and Presbyterian Churches, the Salvation Army, and the Society of Friends accepted invitations to the meeting, which was addressed by two members of the committee, Mr N. A. Collins and the Rev. W. C. Arnold. Mr J. Foster, a . Christchurch City Council town planning officer, was the guest speaker.
District schemes, zoning for industry, problem families, and the building of flats were discussed at the meeting. It was agreed that there was a better prospect of obtaining definite action from the authorities and creat-
ing a public opinion if the Churches worked together, says the report'Concrete suggestions are being prepared and the representatives hope to obtain the support of their Churches for an active programme.
