VARIETY OF USES OF POWER
Future Demand Wil Be Colossal”
Electric heating and refrigeration were here to stay in New Zealand, and air conditioning, perhaps not yet on the American scale, was a coming thing, said Mr John Denford (secretary of the Municipal Electricity Department), in an address to the Christchurch Savage Club. New shades of fluorescent lamps would add colour to our homes, said Mr Denford. Automatic machines, controlled by electric valves, were heralding a new era. But production costs must be lowered. New Zealand’s future power demand would be colossal by our Present standards, said Mr Denford. Geothermal power was being- investigated and coal and oil were both too important chemically to be wasted in combustion. “We should not squander these natural assets, as our forests were squandered in the early days by burning.” Nuclear energy promised power abundance. “Our hope must be that man s moral and spiritual programme will guide and control his material advancement,” said Mr Denford.
