Adoration Cost IOOOGns When Sold As Yearling

TROTTING

Adoration was the outstanding performer among the pacers at the Nelson Trotting Club's winter meeting when she won at her four starts. On each occasion she won with a lot in hand. She revelled in the easy track conditions and her efforts suggested that she will go on to good company. In her earlier racing. Adoration showed plenty of ability, but nervousness at the start of her races prevented her from showing worthwhile form. Adoration has been patiently handled by her Halswell trainer, S. A. Edwards, and she has not had much racing. Her first glimpse of form was at Oamaru last month when she finished with a great run for third behind First Lady and Taipo in a maiden race. She lost a lot of ground at the start of that race, but finished on in grand style. Her next start was in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes at Ashburton on June 2. She stood at the barrier and took no real part in the race.

Adoration is raced by Mr G. Aitchison, of Hampden, who bought her for lOOOgns at a special dispersal sale of the stock he owned in partnership with the West Eyreton trainer, F. G. Holmes. Adoration at the time was only a yearling. Adoration should prove a valuable stud proposition when her racing career is ended. She is a bay filly by U. Scott from Admiration, winner of the Timaru Nursery Stakes, by Grattan Loyal from Bonny Logan, by Logan Pointer from the imported mare, Bonilene. Admiration is also the dam of Esteem, which was sold at the same sale for llOOgns, Shy, which was sold for 1050gns, and Modest, which was sold for 1400gns, The family founded by Bonilene has been one of the most successful in the New Zealand Stud Book. Its members include Bonny Bridge, Adorian, Morano, Forward, Captain Morant, Bayard, Safety Pin, Secure, Denbry, Raceaway and Victory Song. Adoration will be put aside for a short spell now. She will probably be raced again early in the spring. Change of Stables

The Addington trainer, A. J. Bourne, who has had a successful season with Gold Light, is now preparing Denbry. A good winner last season—his three wins included the £2OOO Rattray Handicap at Addington —Denbry failed to strike form in four starts this term. Denbry is a rising nine-year-old gelding by Josedale Grattan frtom the Dillon Hall mare, Mary Hall. Won at Menangle Lilly Craig, which had raced well in rich classic races at Harold Park in recent months, gained a well-earned win at Menangle, near Sydney, recently. She is a three-year-old filly by Light Brigade from La Lilly, the dam also of Regalia, Goldina, Radiancy and Majestic. Lilly Craig was bred at New Brighton by Mr L. A. Williams, who sold her for 400gns to the Sydney trainer, W. Picken, at the 1954 yearling sales.

Left iji Sydney Wee Raider has been left in Sydney with J. D. Watts by his Templeton trainer, D. Green, who returned recently from Australia. Wee Raider did not travel well, and was not at his best in his first two starts at Harold. Park. He did not show up, but is rapidly recovering, and may soon be in winning form. Wee Raider showed useful form in New Zealand but he did not have much luck. He is usually most reliable, and when back to his best he should more than pay his way. Highland Air’s Winnings Highland Air. winner of the Durbar Handicap on the first day of the recent Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting, has now won £2740 in stakes this season, the result of six wins and two placings from 12 starts. A four-year-old gelding by U. Scott from the imported mare, Airflow, , Highland Air is raced by Mr R. A. McKenzie, of Wellington, and he is trained at Yaldhurst by G. B. Noble. Highland Air is one of the most promising staying pacers seen for some time, and next season he should win a good handicap. i ” Australian Vodga” The arrival in New York of the ! New Zealand trotter Vodka did not apparently excite much attention. The “Harness Horse,” self-styled as having the “largest circulation of all journals devoted to the standard-bred horse,” found space in its issue of April 11 for the following: “The Australian trotter Vodga arrived this week, and his owner-trainer Jack Shaw will prep the ‘Down Under’ champion with the hope of getting an invitation to the 25,000-dollar American Trotting Championship on June 14.” Successful Sires

The successful American sire Adios (lmiri 57&sec) is fully booked for the 1956 season at a fee of 5000 dollars. He heads the list of select stallions at the Hanover Shoe Farms, one of the biggest trotting stud farms in the United States. Former champion trotter Hoot Mon (2min) is also fully booked at a fee of 5000 dollars. Other fully-booked sires at Hanover Shoe Farms include Bill Gallon (Imin 59|sec), fee 1000 dollars (£357); Titan Hanover (Imin 58sec), 750 dollars; Star’s Pride (Imin 57 l-ssec), 750 dollars; Knight Dream (Imin 59sec), 750 dollars; and Tar Heel (Imin 57sec), 750 dollars. Trainer’s Win

W. R. Butt, of Templeton, won the trainers’ prize of £5O offered by the Wellington Trotting Club for the most points at the club’s meetings during the 1955-56 season. With 24 points, Butt finished well clear of M. R. Kerr (Auckland) and C. S. Donald (Belfast), who tied for second with 14 points. Points were awarded on the basis of three points for a win, two for a second, and one point for third. The points prize for the most successful driver at the club’s winter meeting, which concluded last Monday, was won by J. A. Carmichael, who gained 10 points. Carmichael is attached to Butt’s stable.
