CLEANING FLUID’S TOXIC EFFECTS
_A Carbon Tetrachloride Investigation An investigation into the use of tne cleaning fluid, carbon tetrachloride, is being made by the Health Department in Christchurch. This was announced by the district medical officer of health (Dr. A. yesterday. Most of the 1300 gallons of the fluid supplied by chemists in Christchurch each year is used domestically and the department is concerned that many persons do not appreciate the toxic effect of its fumes when they are inhaled. A woman died four months asc after being overcome by fumes when a bottle of the fluid broke. Carbon tetrachloride is generally ysed for cleaning stains from fabrics Industrially it is used in cleaning railway carriages and aircraft fuel tanks When investigations were complete the department might make some recommendations about safety precautions for handling the fluid, Dr. Douglas said. The fluid should be .kept away from heat and only used in a ventilated room.
