Bishop Condemns Gambling
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 10. The Bishop of Birmingham (Dr. J. L. Wilson) told a diocesan conference that he will not attend functions where there are raffles for church funds. He described the British Government's premium bonds plan as a regrettable step. "All gambling is a moral evil, and I hope that church people will set an example by refusing to have things like raffles and lotteries for raising funds for church purposes,” he said. “No legislation wil] stop gamblingonly obedience to the moral law and Christian ethics can do that. I think the evil of gambling in Britain is so great that no legislation of any kind would encourage or discourage It. “I think that all we can hope for ii a mitigation of this social evil.”
