The new record bettered the mark of Imin 33 3-ssec set by Citation at the Golden Gate racecourse in 1950. An indication of the speed of the race could be seen in Swaps’ time of Imin 8 4-sisec tor the six furlongs and Imin 20 4-ssec for seven furlongs, an amazing periormance in a mile race.
Swaps ridden by Willie Shoemaker, took the lead from the start and held it all the way. At % the finish he had a lead of about a length and a quarter over Bobby Brocato, which was right with Swaps throughout. Porterhouse, which beat two weeks ago was third.
The win earned Swaps 29,750 dollars (about £13,280) and brought his total winnings to past the 500,000 dollar (about £221,000) mark.
