ELDERLY WOMAN DIES OF BURNS
NIGHTDRESS CATCHES FIRE (New Zealana Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 8. An 81-year-old spinster died this morning in the Dunedin Public Hospital from burns received when her nightdress caught fire just before 11 p.m. on Thursday. She was Frances Martha Goldsmith, of 287 Leith street. She was lighting a candle in anticipation of the 11 p.m.-midnight power cut when she dropped the box of matches. Bending to pick them up, her nightdress ignited and she was burnt around the upper part of the body. CAR HITS POWER POLE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 8. A Minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, the Rev. John William Deenik, his wife and two children were injured when the motor-car in which they were travelling hit a power pole in Titirangi road, New Lynn, at 4.10 p.m. today. All were taken to the Auckland Public Hospital. Mrs Jadiranna Deenik, aged 40. of New Lynn, was admitted to the hospital with concussion. Mr Deenik, aged 37, who suffered cuts to scalp, Betty Deenik, aged 4. shock, and Harry Deenik, aged seven months, a bruised forehead, were treated in the outpatients’ department.
