UNRULY BEHAVIOUR AND ASSAULT
SENTENCE OF BORSTAL DETENTION
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 8.
Borstal training of a maximum of three years, was imposed by Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, on Laurence Edwin Burleigh, aged 18, a workman, when he appeared for sentence on assault and disorderly behaviour charges. Burleigh was the sixth of the “Red Indian” group of youths who beat up others in a brawl at Mount Albert three weeks ago. Counsel said Burleigh’s history indicated irresponsibility rather than criminality.
The Magistrate said Burleigh was a neglected child. He became uncontrolled at an early age. This was his third conviction for assault in a year. Several times he had rejected the help given by child welfare authorities.
