BIG BUSINESS AT THE PERFUMERY COUNTERS

New Zealand production of perfumes last year showed an increase in value of nearly 50 per cent, over 1953-54, and the cash registers at the counters fang in harmony. From an output of £28.272 12 months before. Dominion production rose to £41,608 last year. But by the chemical and pharmaceutical industry’s standards this is but a drop in the bucket. Last year, for example. they produced £435.576 worth of stock licks and remedies, £346,377 worth of weedkillers, and £253.044 worth of fungicides. Other items, from the latest issue of the Abstract of Statistics, show that dentifrice production was £251.568 (£223,409 in 1953-54). hair preparations were £300,362 (£273,401), and makeup preparations £170,818 (£149,017).

But the production of skin treatments was down: £247,205. compared with £271,304 the previous year. The total output of pharmaceutical products for the year was valued at £1.342,795, compared with £1,250,520 in the previous year. During the same year ink production was valued at £247,054 (£194,996) —it would be interesting to have comparable figures for miles of typewriter ribbon produced—disinfectants and antiseptics £246,082 (£235.896), and household and industrial cleaners £409,539 (£342,813).
