“Supersonic Pilots Near Limit”

<Rec. 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, June 6. Pilots flying supersonic aircraft have just about reached the limit of human capability, an American air expert said in London today.
General Joseph D. C. Caldera, directoi of the United States Air Force’s fficht safetv research, told a press conference: “We are almost at the stage where we are piloting man-guided missiles like the British Hunter and the American Century series of aircraft.
“The performance the designers demand results in a corresponding demand on the requirements expected from a pilot.” “Designers are a’most producing an
aircraft bevond human capabilities.” General Caldera said. “When a pilot reaches supersonic and transonic speeds he is just about at the limit of his endurance.”
He said that pilot error accounted for more than half the number of accidents.
