General Joseph D. C. Caldera, directoi of the United States Air Force’s fficht safetv research, told a press conference: “We are almost at the stage where we are piloting man-guided missiles like the British Hunter and the American Century series of aircraft.

“The performance the designers demand results in a corresponding demand on the requirements expected from a pilot.” “Designers are a’most producing an

aircraft bevond human capabilities.” General Caldera said. “When a pilot reaches supersonic and transonic speeds he is just about at the limit of his endurance.”

He said that pilot error accounted for more than half the number of accidents.
