NEW TURBO-PROP AIRLINERS

115-PASSENGER VANGUARDS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 6. Britain is now building the first of her new turbo-propeller airliners, the Vickers Vanguard, which will carry 115 passengers at speeds up to 425 miles an hour. Vickers Armstrongs, Ltd., said today the first Vanguard was scheduled to fly in the autumn of 1958. The Vanguard is a much bigger aircraft than the Vickers Viscount, the first and still the only turbo-propeller airliner in scheduled airline service.

The Vanguard employs a “double bubble” fuselage. The makers said it has a huge freight capacity as well as exceptionally large passenger accommodation and could carry its full payload on non-top stages up to 2000 miles. Like the Viscount, it will use RollsRoyce engines.
