QUALITY OF N.Z. GOODS
IMPROVEMENT NOTED Improved quality of goods manufactured in the Dominion and a growing pride of manufacturers in the articles they were producing, especially since many were being bought by overseas countries, had been characteristic of a rapid expansion of secondary industry in New Zealand in recent years, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr E. H. Halstead) told members of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association at a luncheon in Christchurch yesterday. It had been interesting and significant to notice in recent years that manufacturers in New Zealand had changed their outlook.
“There has been a large section of our manufacturers who have suffered a little from an inferiority complex over the years, but the time has come to stop that and the consuming public should realise that we have grown out of that stage and realise also that ‘Well Made, New Zealand’ really means something,” he said. Mr Halstead said that it was the job of every person who sold goods made in New Zealand to believe that the goods were well entitled to bear the label.
Mr Halstead is at present spending three days in Christchurch inspecting industries. He will return to Auckland by air this afternoon.
