FROM BRITAIN BY YACHT
LAST STAGE OF MAJOR HATTER’S JOURNEY iKew Zeaiana 'Press A«ncumnw> WESTPORT. June 7. The final stage df.hfs long voyagp | halfway’.around the world in his small | yawl-rigged yacht. Sheila 11. was begun at Westport last night by Major Adrian Hayter, who left at 11 o'clock for Tarakehe. and then Nelson. Major Hayter travelled to Westport by car from Takar.a yesterday afternoon -and intended to stay for the rest of the week. but. when he received a very favourable weather forecast last night, he made a quick decision to leave Westport at high tide. The yacht had been well prepared for the coastal journey and, at the time cf departure, presented a striking contrast to the storm-battered little | vessel which fought its. way through the heax-y seas on the Westport bar on May 27, at the end of Major Hayter's 11-v,-eek Tasman crossing from Perth. Mr T. Smith, of Westport, had taken ■it on himself to clean up the vessel. Try out its engine and repair the saiis. Major Hayter was accompanied by his brother. Squadron Leader J. C. F. Hayter. Major Hayter hoped to be able to reach Tarakohe to-night as good conditions were expected for most of the trip. He thought that he would use his auxiliary engine for most, if not all of the way.
