NEW FIBRE

DEMONSTRATION OF USES The manufacturers of a new polyester fibre staged a colourful exhibition in Christchurch to show its ’versatility to manufacturers and buyers ,of clothing and textiles. ..... In the ballroom of the Winter Garden brightly Jit show cases displayed the sort of clothing and the materials for industrial use, which this new fibre is capable of producing. To show the polyester fibre’s uses fishing nets, and lines, ropes, a rubbef lined fire hose and sail cloth for yachts were displayed beside gossamer fine permanently pleated lingerie, rain coats for men and women, ties, socks, summer sports clothing and furnishings in net and heavier weaves. Part of the exhibition was a fashion parade of elegant overseas garments made from either the pure fibre or a mixture of about half of the fibre and half wool. For evening wear, the frocks either ballerina length or full length and formal, the polyester fibre voile, lace and brocade showed to advantage its qualities for draping and gathering for the bouffant styles, and its sleekness for the more slim fitting fashions. One formal evening gown was embroidered with thousands of tiny seed pearls and shells. The hobble hemline folded up the front of the skirt to a large bow at the Waistline. For the full skirted styles underskirts of tulle and voile were built in to the frocks. As a contrast the suits for practical day wear featured both pencil slim and pleated skirts worn with semifitting jackets, and were in a birdseye pattern.
