ADDINGTON MARKET

FAT CATTLE ERRATIC Values Decline After Better Opening

STORE SHEEP STEADY After last week’s depressed sale the market for fat cattle opened out on a better note at Addington yesterday, with best steer beef, in particular, showing a useful appreciation, but as more cattle arrived to fill out thd entry the market slipped again and ended on a level better than a week ago. W. : .. There was not very much change in the market for store cattle. Steer calves sold fairly well, but heifer calves were not wanted. Almost all sections of the store sheep market were steady. The only altefation was a slight improvement in the rates for good sorts of old ewes. Values for fat lambs and fat sheep were also about on a par with those ruling a week ago. STOKE SHEEP The yarding of store sheep totalled 5884 head, including 3343 lambs, 509 two-tooth ewes, 1632 older ewes, and 400 wethers, compared with 4587 head last week. The sale -was not followed by a large gallery at any stage, and toward the end the following was very small,'* but throughout there seemed to be a fairly sustained interest. The sale for wether lambs was a sound one. A few choice pens sold up to 51s the price paid for a line of 50 from C. Kimber (Springston). A feature of the sale was the high proportion of the total entry which sold at more than 40s, and only one or two pens realised under 30s. The best of the wether iambs sold at 47s to 51s, good at. 40s to 465, average and medium at 35s to 40s, and others down to 29s 6d Slightly fewer than 1000 ewe lambs were intruded in the offering. The best nf these made from 50s to 60s, with average sorts at 40s to 48s, and others selling down, to 325.. Ninety-one shorn Romneys from JI A. Parsons (Hororata) topped the market at 60s. STORE CATTLE e Good steer calves met a fairly ready sale in the store pens. The top price of the day was £ll Is for a line of Aberdeen Angus from W. H. Robinson (Tormore). Again heifer calves were at a discount. There was little strength in the market for adult store cattle, and, buyers were only attracted by the low rates ruling. Sales of quotable lines were as follows: On account of C. Deans (Waiau), 20 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen AngusHereford cross steer calves at £7 6s to £lO Is; Southland client, 35 Hereford heifer calves at £6 8s 6d to £8 16s; W. H. Richmond (Seddon). 100 Aberdeen Angus cows at £8 13s 6d to £lO 8s 6d; T. C. Dickson (Waiau). 36 Hereford cows at £3 13s 6d to £5 18s 6d, 12 Aberdeen Angus cross at £5 3s 6d, 16 Aberdeen Angus at £4 3s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE There was an entry of about 40 head. Consisting mainly of heifers. These were a rather mixed assortment, with one or two good quality sorts among the offering. Cows, generally, were of rather mediocre quality, with one or two good types coming forward. Bidding was not very spirited, except'for the few betterquality sorts. Values were, perhaps, slightly easier than last week, taking quality into account. The best price for cows was £37, and for heifers £49. Best second, third, and fourth calvers sold at £29 to £33, with the top to £37, while aged and inferior cows were down to as low as £5. Best heifers sold at up to £3B. with an outstanding heifer selling at £49.. Medium heifers made £29 to £35,, with others down to about £B. The demand was poor for any cattle of really inferior quality. VEALERS Veal prices were lower yesterday. The yarding was of good size, but on the whole quality was not so good. Over most or the sale, values were down by about 30s to £2 a head, but towards the end there was a further depreciation and sales became hard to make at all. Values were:—Large runners, £l5 16s to £lB 3s 6d: good heavy vealers £l2 to £l3 Is, good medium-weight vealers £lO to £ll 18s 6d, good light vealers £8 to £9 18s 6d, and good small sorts £5 8s 6d to £7 18s 6d; rough heavy vealers £l2 to £l4 Is. medium-weight rough vealers £lO to £ll 18s 6d, light rougher sorts £7 to £9 18s 6d. rough £4 10s to £6 18s 6d, and small calves and other rough sorts down to 50s. FAT PIGS Entries in the porker section were again fairy heavy, with four trucks from outside districts included in the offering. There was a fair proportion of plain and unfinished sorts which had to be transferred to the store pig section. At the beginning of the sale values were a little better than last week. In the middle of the sale they eased 4s to 5s a head, but revived again towards the end. Choppers were forward in much smaller numbers, and a good sale resulted. In the bacon section the entry was -dmuch smaller, and last week’s rates were fully maintained. Values were:— Light porkers, £4 2s 6fi to £5 Is 6d. Medium porkers, £5 9s 6d to £6 9s 6d. Heavy porkers, £6 14s 6d to £7 14s 6d. Choppers, £lO Is to £lB 3s 6d. Light baconers, £8 9s 6d to £9 19s 6d. Medium baconers, £lO 4sr 6d to £ll 9s 6d. Heavy baconers, £ll 12s 6d to £l2 3s 6d. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was similar in size to that of last week, and consisted mainly of medium and good quality stores. There was a medium attendance of buyers. Last week’s recovery for store pigs disappeared, but weaners maintained last week's levels. Values were:— Weaners. 25s to 355. Slips, 36s to 40s. Small and medium stores, 45s to 50s. Large stores, 55s to 70s.
