CANOE RACES AT GAMES

N.Z. May Not Send Crew

Because few Olympic racing kayaks could be obtained early in the season it is now doubtful if the New Zealand Canoeing Association will be able to nominate a representative crew for the Olympic Games in Melbourne. Canoeists consider that if it had been possible to obtain more kayaks, representative crews could certainly have reached Olymnic standard in time. The craft cost £lOO each and one imported from Australia for the New Zealand championships at Wanganui proved extremely successful, reducing national times considerably.

Determined not to make the same mistake again canoeists decided at their conference, held in conjunction with the championships, to form a national council for the control of the sport and to keep in touch with overseas tournaments. It also decided to work in close conjunction with the Youth Hostels Association and to complete a chain of cabins on the banks of such popular rivers as the Wanganui and the Waikato, the Central lakes and on the Auckland coast line. The compilation of reliable information on rivers suitable for canoes was also planned.
