199 BELIEVED DROWNED
Pakistani Steamer Lost In Storm
(N Z Press Association—Copyright.) RACCA (East Pakistan). June 5.
Only three of the 202 persons on board a small mail steamer which sank on Saturday off Chittagong, East Pakistan, are so far known to have reached safety. Ships and aircraft are still carrying out an increasingly hopeless search around Sandwip Island, in the Bay of Bengal, where the steamer—the 279ton Badora —was wrecked in a monsoon storm while crossing from Chittagong to Sandwip. The three known survivors struggled ashore on the island, utterly exhausted. A number of bodies are reported to have been washed ashore xm neighbouring Hatia Island. The pilot of one of the searching aircraft has reported sighting the Badora’s funnel and masts many miles south of Sandwip Island. The Badora was carrying 50,000 rupees (about £3700) intended for the Government Treasury offices on Sandwip Island. The police escort of six are among those believed drowned. According to the steamer company the Badora was in radio contact with Chittagong on Saturday evening, reporting bad weather. Nothing more was heard from her and a search began late on Sunday when she failed to arrive at her destination.
