HEAVIEST FROST THIS YEAR

9.6 DEGREES YESTERDAY AT HAREWOOD Heavy woollen coats and gloves were almost a uniform in Christchurch yesterday morning, as cyclists and pedestrians made their way to work in the heaviest frost so far this year. At Harewood a frost of 9.6 degrees was recorded, and at the Magnetic Observatory 9.2 degrees. Yesterday’s frost began early on Tuesday evening, and at 8 p.m. there was four degrees of frost. Throughout the night the temperature fell, and it was not until 9.15 a.m. yesterday that it again rose above freezing point. Previous heavy frosts this year in Christchurch were on May 1 (7.6 degrees )and May 16 (7.6 degrees). At Harewood, a frost of 9.1 degrees was recorded on May 17. The heaviest frost yet recorded in Christchurch in June was in 1907. when the city shivered under a frost of 18 degrees.
