WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Hornby.—The sixth birthday anniversary of the institute was celebrated at the May meeting. Mrs Bray presided and welcomed Mrs W. Pattison, Mrs E. Holmes, and Mrs H. Prebble, of the Canterbury federation and members of other institutes. Musifcal items and songs were contributed by Mrs Ridout and party, Mrs Searle, Mrs Warremus, Miss Beverley Wright, Siandra, Diane and Michael McPhee; recitations by Mrs Pashby, and a sketch by Mesdames Cornelius, Hack, and Robb. Mrs Pattison presented the following cups and prizes won during the year:—Thompson cup for horticulture: Mrs Gordon 1, Mrs Fletcher 2, Mrs Narbey 3. Institute cup: Mrs Gordon 1, Mrs Shadwell 2, Mrs Narbey and Mrs Wellsmore (equal) 3. Cooking prize; Mrs Gordon 1. Mrs Shadwell 2, Mrs, Narbey 3. Hanmer Springs.—At a well-attended meeting of the branch it was decided to pay the expenses of one delegate to the Dominion conference to be held at Invercargill during July. The president was asked to represent the branch, but other members were invited to attend at their own expense. A grant was also made to the housekeeping secretary funds. Mrs Littler, a member of the branch for the last 18 years, who is leaving the district, was presented with a posy of dried flowers. Mr Sjnythe, of the Adult Education Department, gave an interesting address on Cyprus. Arrangements were also made for him to conduct a series of lessons on “Taking the Chair at Meetings.” Mrs Bullen and Mrs Fitzgibbon reported on attending a meeting of the district executive committee at the home of Mrs Rawson Davison, “Lowry Peaks,” Culverden.
