CONTROL OVER TERRORISTS

NICOSIA. June 6. The Cyprus Government claimed today that security forces were gradually getting control of the situation in the troubled island. Its annual report issued today said that more and more people were coming forward with information about terrorists. The most disturbing feature of the year had been the active defiance of all authority by Greek-Cyoriot youths, which had disrupted education. The report said that new water supply schemes for Nicosia. Limassol, and Famagusta had been completed at a cost of more than £1.000.000. and a record number of village water supply schemes had been completed. A number of military projects were in various stages of completion, costins in all £40.000.000 to £50.000.000. Between March. 1952. and March. 1956. a total of £12.371.935 had been spent by the Services on major .installations. More Terrorist Incidents Terrorists yesterday wounded six British serviceman, none of them seriously. in a bomb ambush. In another incident two other members of the security forces on a motorcycle patrol were wounded, one seriously. by a bomb. In London the Colonial Office announced the appointment of a new chief to command the Cyprus police He is the Chief Constable of Warwickshire <Colonel Geoffrey White). He will take over next month from Mr G H. Robins.

The Cyprus Governor (FieldMarshal Sir John Harding) held a conference with Britain’s Services chiefs in London last night on the tnilitary situation in Cyprus. Later, in the Hotxse of Commons. Sir John Harding gave a detailed picture to a packed private meeting of- members of both Houses of Parliament.
