N.Z. SURFING TEAM

VISIT TO AUSTRALIA THIS YEAR (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 5. New Zealand surf life-savers are to take part in an international surf event against teams from Australia, South Africa and other countries at Torquay, Melbourne, next November, and a team of eight is to be selected at once to give its members a chance to train. This was decided at the annual conference of the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Association, held during the week-end. Previously an invitation extended by Australia had been declined by New Zealand because of the cost involved and because members of the surf council believed that money available could be put to better purpose in educational work within the country. Now, however, a grant, believed to be about £5OO, is to be made available from an Australian source to defray a large part of the cost of sending a New Zealand team to the contest.

In addition, the New Zealand team will take part in the Australian interstate championships early in December and also in another Sydney carnival.
