WOMAN BOOKMAKER FINED £200
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 5. A fine of £2OO was imposed on Grace Russejl Joll, aged 48, when she pleaded guilty in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today, before Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., to a charge of bookmaking. Detective-Sergeant T. W. Irving said that the accused was found bookmans ing at her home in Avondale on Saturday afternoon. She claimed to be an agent acting for a principal. Records showed that she had taken £77 to the time of the arrival of the police, and in 20 minutes the police took £44 in telephone bets. Counsel said. that the accused became im agent after a breakdown in health, but the Magistrate said he could not accept a plea of ill-health to justify an offence.
