Elephant Population Falls In Ceylon

COLOMBO. The elephant population of Ceylon, which belongs to a species found nowhere else, is officially estimated to have dwindled to 1000, from 30,000 a century ago. The figures were given by the Conservator of Forests, Mr J. A. de Silva, to the Central Board of Agriculture, which is considering a scheme to connect wild life reserves by protected corridors to give a better chance of survival to elephants and other animals.
