CHINCHILLAS
Sir, —I was shocked to read of the proposal by the Department of Agriculture to import chinchillas to New Zealand for commercial purposes. Surely there are enough innocent creatures slaughtered in this country a’ready. Mr Butcher’s remark that they are pretty little creatures, but there are “a lew quid to be made,” makes nasty reading. Are these little
creatures to be slaughtered to appease the vanity of women? Why are all the women’s organisations, and all Christian wbmen throughout this country so silent on these matters? What a pity they do not take a leaf out of the late Dowager Duchess of Hamilton’s book, who refused to wear fur coats or even fur-backed, gloves. Even when she had to wear official robes they were always trimmed with artificial fur fabric instead of ermine. —Yours, etc., CHRISTIAN WOMEN SPEAK UP. June 3, 1956.
