OBITUARY

BRIGADIER J. HAWKINS “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, June 5. The death occurred in Wellington of Brigadier James Hawkins, a wellknown retired Salvation Army officer. Before his retirement in 1949 he was manager of the Miramar Men’s Social Service Centre, with responsibility for alcoholics, discharged prisoners, and men on remand or on probation. In the course of his long career. Brigadier Hawkins served as a corps officer at Blenheim, Napier, Gisborne, Palmerston North, Wanganui. Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington. During World War I he managed the Featherston Hostel, run by the Salvation Army for servicemen and their relatives. Brigadier Hawkins is survived by his wife and two children, Miss Joyce Hawkins and Mr Beverly Hawkins.
