U.N. RESOLUTION ON PALESTINE
Modified Western Proposal
NEW YORK. June 4.
The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously today to have the United Nations Secretary-General (Mr Hammarskjold) continue his efforts to ease tension in the Middle East.
The decision came after Britain made* a last-minute modification of her Western-backed resolution to meet the objections raised last week by the Soviet Union and the Arab countries.
Previous revisions of the British plan had eliminated other major points of difference and opened the way for agreement.
In its final form the resolution was more limited in scope than the Western Powers had hoped, because the Arabs had insisted that the SecretaryGeneral’s mission must be limited to aeeking full compliance with the armistice agreements of 1949. The resolution commended Mr Hammarskjold for his peace mission to the Middle East which ended early last month with new cease-fire agreements between Israel and her Arab neighbours.
