FIVE CARS IN ACCIDENT

TWO IN HEAD ON COLLISION

MAN, WIFE, AND FOUR CHILDREN INJURED (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. June 4.

A husband and wife and their four children are in the Patea Public Hospital suffering from injuries caused in an accident north of Waitotara tonight. At least three other persons were injured. Five cars, two of which were wrecked, were involved in the accident.

The condition of the family admitted to hospital, Mr and Mrs Henry Edwin Ward, and their four children, of Kakaramea, was said to be satisfactory late to-night. They are suffering mostly from abrasions and cuts. The accident occurred about 7.15 p.m. when a large modern car travelling south on the Hawera-Wanganui highway suddenly stopped, causing the car following, driven by Mr Gordon Laurence Sorensen, of Omata Valley, to swerve violently to the right, directly into the path of a long line of traffic travelling north from

Wanganui. Most were coming from the Wanganui races.

Mr Sorensen tried to swing his car in betw’een the car that had stopped and the oncoming traffic, but struck the car driven by Mr Ward almost head-on. The car behind Mr Ward’s, driven by Mr Alan Stuart, of Bedford road, Inglewood, also tried to avoid a collision. but could not stop before crashing into the wrecked cars of Messrs Sorensen and Ward. The • suddenness of the accident caused another car in the long line of traffic to smash into the back of a car immediately in front. Nobody was hurt, although both cars were extensively damaged. Meanwhile, the car that had suddenly stopped for no apparent reason backed a few yards and then made off in the direction of Wanganui. Mr Sorensen suffered a few cuts and bruises. His car and Mr Ward’s car were wrecked. CAR STRIKES POLE FIVE PERSONS INJURED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 4.
