NURSES’ PAY

Sir,—lt is not only the remuneration of nurses which requires to be brought up to date. Few realise that nurses work six full days a week. They, almost alone of all citizens, have no public holidays, or time off in lieu of them. Not for them is the joy of the family gathering at Christmas: and their variable duty times restrict social activities almost to nothing. If something could be done to improve these conditions it would mean more than money, though adequate pay for such responsible work is long overdue. —Yours, etc., GRATEFUL. June 2, 1956.
