MORE RIOTING IN BOMBAY
One Person Killed; Two Injured (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) BOMBAY, June 3. One person was killed and two injured when the police opened fire on demonstrating crowds tonight soon after Mr Nehru, the Indian Prime Minister, finished addressing a public meeting on the Chowpatthy Sands, on the shore of the-Arabian Sea. Five hundred uniformed police had thrown a close ring round the meeting. The trouble erupted tonight after Mr Nehru told the leaders of his ruling Congress Party during the day that the Government would go ahead with its plan for Bombay. Mr Nehru said today that Bombay City will be centrally administered as provided for in the States Reorganisation Bill now before Parliament. He added that the citv’s eventual position in the scheme will be “democratically” decided after five years. Mr Nehru was addressing the AllIndia Congress Committee, the policymaking body of the ruling ’Congress Party now in session. He was giving what he described as a clarification of the Government’s policy on Bombay City in the States reorganisation scheme. Widespread demonstrations and riots broke out earlier this year in Bombay, when the Government first announced its scheme. Mr Nehru said today that the answer to the question why Bombay City ’Should not be allowed here and now to decide its future was: “It has disqualified itself. It is not in a nor-, mal mood. It is not r in a peaceful mood.
