CONFERENCE ON SCOUTING

ADDRESS BY DEAN OF CHRISTCHURCH

A belief in the value of the work they were doing, and a sure knowledge of what they were trying to do were needed by members of the scouting movement, said the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) in an address given at the opening of the Canterbury RoverRanger conference in the St. Saviour’s Church Hall on Saturday morning. About 115 persons, including representatives from Auckland, Wellington, and Invercargill are attending the conference. which is the first of its kind and will conclude today. The conference was officially opened by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) and visitors were welcomed by the deputy-provincial commissioner JMr G. Ferris)- and the divisional commissioner of the Girl Guides (Miss J. Buchanan). On Saturday afternoon a treasure hunt was arranged so that visitors might see the landmarks of Christchurch. and on Saturday evening a dinner was held at which Mr R. E. Glensor. a former Dominion secretary of the scouting movement, gave an address The theme of the conference is “Training for Tomorrow.”
