Waitresses Instead Of Stewards

The Matson Navigation Company, which is scheduled to begin a luxury liner service to Australia and New Zealand in October, would use women stewards (waitresses) when the new Mariposa and Monterey sail, the companv announced today.

Thirty experienced luxury-hotel waitresses would be employed under a head matron, said Mr C. L. Christian, the company’s superintending steward.

The waitresses would have “attractive. comfortable living quarters” on the forward main deck, with their own lounge, outside deck soace. recreation arpn. and laundry facilities, he said.

Special uniforms had been designed for them. Mr Christian said, separate ones for breakfast, luncheon and dinner.

Male stewards would be confined to service in the state room and public room areas of each ship, Mr Christian said.
