BRITAIN BEATS CHILE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 2. Roger Becker ensured victory for Britain against Chile in the quarter-finals of the European Zone of the Davis Cup at Bristol today. Becker beat Andres Hammersley, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in 55 minutes to give Britain a winning margin of three rubbers to one, and a place in the European Zone semifinal. In the remaining match of the European Zone quarter-final at Bristol, L. Avala (Chile) beat W. A. Knight (Britain). 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. 6-0. Britain thus won the tie, 3-2. At Duisburg France gained a winning lead over West Germany in the quarterfinals, winning the doubles after taking two singles yesterday. Paul Remy and Marcel Bernard beat Peter Scholl and Franz Feldbausch in straight sets. 6-3. 6-2. 6-2. At Brussels, on June 2, Sweden qualified for the semi-final of the European Zone, in which they will meet Britain. In the doubles, Sweden’s Sven Davidson and Torsten Johansson beat Jackie Brichant and Gino Mezzi, of Belgium, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. 2-6. 6-4. At Bologna, Italy and Denmark each won the opening singles. Kurt Nielsen Denmark, beat Giuseppe Merlo. 9-7, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Nicola Pietrangeli. of Italy, beat Torsten Ulrich, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0. The winners of the tie will meet France in the semi-final.

In the Surrey Lawn Tennis Championships at Surbiton today. lan Vermaak, the South African champion, won the men’s singles title, beating his fellowcountryman, 22-year-old Gordon Forbes (■who yesterday beat Jaroslav Drobny), by 6-4, 6-3. In the final of the women’s singles Miss A. Gibson (United States) beat Miss J A. Shilcock (Sussex), 6-3, 13-11. In the men's doubles final, Forbes and Vermaak, South Africa, beat Drobny. Egypt, and D. Fontana. Canada, 6-3, 6-4. In the women’s doubles final. Mrs T. Long, Australia, and Mrs B. Pratt, United States, beat Miss A. Buxton, England, and Miss Gibson, United States, 6-4, 6-3
