Beharrell Beats Taylor

John Beharrell. the 18-year-old “wonder boy” golfer from Birmingham. today won the British Amateur , Championship at Troon, beating Leslie Taylor (Glasgow), 5 and 4. Beharrell is the youngest titleholder in the 71 years’ history of the : I amateur championship. Nevertheless in this, his first bid for ’ the championship, he has shown the capabilities of a seasoned campaigner, and he is regared as the greatest ; “find” in British golf for many years. At 32 years of age, Taylor is a Scottish international, but his greater ex- ■ perience was of little avail today against the youngster who won the ; first hole, lost the second and then ■ established mastery by taking three in ’ a row from the fourth. Beharrell was ;4 up at the end of the first round and was once 6 up afterwards. Taylor then fought back so well that .; he won four successive holes, but ’ j Beharrell rallied and went ahead 1 i again to win with four holes to spare. ' This was the first all-British final . since 1939, the first English-Scottish - final since 1929 and the first time an • English golfer has won the amateur • champinnshin sirve 1933, when the ’ Hon.
