TOURNAMENT IN TEXAS
PETER THOMSON IN SIXTH PLACE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) FORT WORTH (Texas), May 6. Peter Thomson, the Austdalian golf professional and British open champion, tied for sixth place in the Colonial national invitation golf tournament which finished today. The 72-hole event was won by Mike Souchak, who returned a 280 to finish one stroke ahead of Tommy Bolt. Thomson had returned 69 and ‘72 in the first two rounds to be tied in first place after 36 holes, but he slipped back in the last two rounds, returning two 73’s for a total of Jimmy Demaret, Ben Hogan, and Bo Winneger also finished with 287’s to tie with Thomson for sixth place. The leaders were:—Mike Souchak, 74. 72, 65, 69—280; Tommy Bolt, 70, 72, 68, 71—281; Gardner Dickinson. 73, 71, 67. 74 285; George Bayer. 73, 72. 71, 70—286; Stan Leonard. 72, 74. 69, 71—286. The win was worth 5000 dollars to Souchak. Thomson’s share of the prize money was 1187 dollars. FREYBERG ROSE BOWL HAWKE’S BAY TEAM (New Zealana Press Association) NAPIER, May 7. The selectors have chosen the following Hawke’s Bay team for the Freyberg Rose Bowl golf competition at New Plymouth on May 15, 16, and 17:— G. E. Wilson (captain), P. C. Peacock. S. G. Jones, F. T. Gordon, H. R. Davis, and J. M. Dorreen (Napier). Reserve: R. B. Dailey.
