FOOTBALL CUP FINAL
Former Nazi Member Of Winning Team MEDAL PRESENTED BY QUEEN (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. May 6. A former Nazi paratrooper yesterday received a medal from the Queen. He is Berg Trautmann. aged 30, goalkeeper in the Manchester City eleven which won the Football Association Cup. Trautmann. dazed from a head injury in a goal-mouth tussle, had to be helped up to the Royal box to receive his gold medal, given to players of the winning side. He is the first German to receive the medal. Trautmann—“Mr Anticipation.” Manchester City enthusiasts call him —came to Britain as a prisoner of war. He stayed on after the war as a farm worker. At week-ends he played goal-keeper for St. Helens, a small Lancashire side. Soon several top English clubs wanted him. He chose Manchester City. Former servicemen threatened to bovcott the club, but the clamour was killed by his superlative skill and his off-field conduct. The German, now married to an English girl, received another honour last Thursday—he was presented with the “Footballer of the Year” trophy, awarded by the votes of Britain’s football writers.
