MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE
AUCKLAND MOTORIST ON TRIAL (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 7. The Crown case against Eric Kaye Richards, aged 23, a workman, who "is charged with negligent driving causing death, and with failing to stop after an accident, began today in the Supreme Court. Richards pleaded not guilty. The hearing is before Mr Justice Stanton and a jury. The accused is represented by Mr W. W. King. Mr G. D. Speight, for the Crown, said that the accused was travelling very fast—one witness would say at 60 miles an hour—and was partly across his wrong side of the road when he crashed into two women, one of whom died instantly and the other while on her way to hospital. Mr Speight said the accident occurred at 8 p.m. on March 17—a fine night with good visibility. The women were waiting in the middle of Mount Albert road for traffic to clear when they were struck by a car driven by the accused. One woman was carried 64ft, and the other was apparently carried on the top of the car. The accused travelled about 120 yards before stopping. The hearing will continue tomorrow.
