CHILD SCALDED IN STEAM TENT
ACCIDENT DUE TO FAULT IN EQUIPMENT (From Our Ourn Reporter) GREYMOUTH, March 14.
A report on the accidental scalding of an infant in a steam tent at the Greymouth Hospital, for which a jury awarded more than £12.000 damages, was made to the Grey Hospital Beard by the surgeon-superintendent of the hospital, Mr S. de C. Barclay, last evening.
An electrical defect was the essen-l tial cause of the accident. Mr Barclay • said. The defect, which had been \ long-standing and unknown to the staff, resulted in water boiling and' spouting into the child’s face. Mr Barclay said that the child had been under constant supervision and j had last been seen 10 or 15 minutes' before the accident was discovered. As no safer type of apparatus had; been found in New Zealand, the use', of it had now been banned at the hospital except in special circumstances, he said
