CANTERBURY COLLEGE HAS GOOD TOURNAMENT SWIMMING TEAM

Canterbury University College, holder of the New Zealand Universities’ winter tournament shield, is likely to take home the summer shield from Wellington this Easter.

The college is particularly strong in rowing and shooting. Its rowing team has been nominated for the Olympic Games in Melbourne and its shooting team is the present holder of the New Zealand Universities’ record. Canterbury has some outstanding swimmers competing for it—no fewer than 12 provincial champions and four present or past national titleholders Over the shorter distances Canterbury will be relying on a Wellington representative. John Noble who will be supported in the 220 yards freestyle by Bruce Wallace, the South Canterbury distance champion. Wallace will contest also the quarter mile.

In the breaststroke there is a very strong trio consisting of lan McDonald. Canterbury and New Zealand 220 yards champion; Finley M Kenzie. former Canterbury titleholder; and Andre Peters, Canterbury title and

record holder for 110 yards butterfly and breaststroke. Peters, a New Zealand University blue, will swim in the 100 yards butterfly with a Canterbury rival also a blue, John Broomfield. Broomfield is provincial medley record-breaker and will be hard to beat in both medley and backstroke <lOO yards) at the tournament. John White, former Nelson and New Zealand junior record holder, will swim for Canterbury in backstroke events. Outstanding among the women is Miss Janet Spooner, 1954 New Zealand junior diving champion, who took the Canterbury senior title this year. Miss Spooner will also be competing in freestyle sprints and is expected to be well placed in three events. The Canterbury water polo team will be led by the provincial B team captain, McKenzie, who played for The Rest against New Zealand this year. Broomfield and Peters, the two blues, will be in the team also. Peters is a Canterbury representative.
