MAYOR WELCOMES ATHLETES
There w’as special significance in the New Zealand athletic championships this year in view of the Olympic Games in Melbourne later in the year, said the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane. M.P.) at a civic reception yesterday morning for the visiting athletes now in Christchurch for the championships. Christchurch, W’hich last held the championships in 1949, prided itself on providing adequate playing areas for its youth, said the Mayor. The president of the New’ Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr S. G. Leeder) and the president of the Canterbury Centre (Flight Lieutenant E. Lunn) also spoke.
