Rae Twice Equals 100 Yards Resident Record

SIX FINALS DECIDED AT LANCASTER PARK

Superbly fit from his recent Australian tour, the 21-year-old Auckland sprinter, M. L. Rae. twice equalled his national 100 yards resident record of 9.7 sec during the first section of the New Zealand senior athletic championships at Lancaster Park yesterday afternoon. It was magnificent sprinting. Rae was markedly superior to the other competitors, and he won his heat bj - four yards and his semi-final by five yards.

Although no records were broken, performances were generally of a high class. Most of the finals will be decided this morning and this afternoon.

Six finals were decided yesterday. The new champions are:—Hammer throw. D. McD. Clarke (Otago); 20 kilometre road walk, N. R. Read (Wellington); six miles, H. Rodger (Auckland); 220 vard's hurdles. D. Steward (Auckland); long jump, P. S. Price (Canterbury); one mile relay (4 x 440 yards), Auckland.

Because of a late scratching, heats were not run in the mile, and spectators who had gone to Lancaster Park to see the two star runners. M. G. Halberg and N. Scott, both of Auckland, were disappointed. In the second heat of the 100 yarcs, B. Nicie (Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay) appeared to beat the gun by just a fraction, but there was no recall. Rae moved through fast, and his beautiful rhythmical action soon carried him to the front. The other placings were very closely contested, with the second and third men. B. L. Smith (Wellington) and I. Kerr (Otago), both being timed at lO.lsec. The winners of the other two heats. A. R. P. Eustace (West Coast, North Island) and R. Hiskens (West Coast. North Island) both returned 9.9 sec. Rae won his semi-final in the same convincing fashion. Two Canterbury men, P. J. Fleming and M. A. Courtney, were placed third in the heats, but were eliminated in the semi-finals. The six miles, which was expected to be a feature race with a tussle between the national record-holder, H. Rodger (Auckland), and the national cross-coua-try chamuion, K. E. Williams (Otago), was a runaway win for Rodger in oOnun 17.8 sec. Seven started, and alter a slow start witn several runners sharing tne lead, Rodger took the lead in the sixtn lap. His long springy action soon carnca him away from the field, and he won by more than 200 yards.

Lapped by Rodger. N. Taylor (Hawse's Bay-Poverty Bay) ran outside him for several laps. Williams tried to stay witn Rodger, but withdrew after 17 laps. The oppressive conditions appeared to get the better of many of the competitors, several' of whom ran well below their form at the recent provincial championships. C. F. Reece (Canterbury) was one of the Se. Even Rodger was extremely tired at the finish, although the time was well outside his national record of 2Smm 53.8 sec.

Good Hammer Throwing The standard in the hammer throw was the best ever achieved at a meeting in New Zealand. The first three men all threw more than IfiOlt. Althougn Clark won the event with 164 ft sin. the honours for consistency went to the improving D. D. Leech (Canterbury). Clark made his winning throw on his seconc attempt, and his remaining four tries were all “no throws.” M. Carr (Wellington) made his best throw on the second also, taking second place with 162 ft 10* 2 in Leech showed steady progress in nis throws and reached his best on the tilth with 160 ft 9jin. Possibly the most imsroved5 roved hammer thrower in the country, . MacGregor (Southland) gained fourth place.

P. S. Price (Canterbury) unexpectedly won the long jump with 22ft. His first jump was his best. Several better-per-formed jumpers failed: although they cleared greater distances they fouled tne-take-off board. A. W. Bell (Waikato) Was one of these, and in one no-jump cleared more than 23ft. R. W. Webb (Southland) was another who failed to •trike the board cleanly. The 20-kilometre road walk was a triumph for Wellington. Its representatives filled the three places. Great tmngs were expected of J. R. Hyslop (Canterbury). who had bettered the Bririsn Olympic qualifying standard by about 40sec. Hyslop set a cracking pace from the start, and Read followed him closely It was apparent that neither could maintain so fast a pace, and with about three miles to go Hyslop "cracked.” and naif a mile later he withdrew’. The 220 yards hurdles final was D. Steward's race all the wav. His lime ©f 245 sec was .2sec better than the NewZealand standard. A. G. Lawless (Otago; lost an almost certain second place when he rapped the final hurdle. Conditions were almost perfect, and if they are as good today some highclass performances are certain.
