BOOT WORKERS LAID OFF

44 FROM FACTORIES IN CHRISTCHURCH

UNION DEPUTATION TO MEET MINISTER Forty-four footwear workers from two Christchurch factories have been laid off in the last week. The secretary of the Footwear Operatives’ Union in Christchurch (Mr G. Robinson) said last evening he understood that footwear workers had also been laid off in Auckland. Mr Robinson and union officers from Auckland and Wellington will form a deputation to discuss the laying off of workers with the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. J. Eyre) in Wellington today.

Mr Robinson said the reasons for the laying-off were probably the “credit squeeze” and the Government’s granting of licences for the importation of footwear.

“The Government’s granting of import licences has probably caused retailers to hold off from placing orders with New Zealand footwear manufacturing firms,” he said. “New Zealand retailers are laying off buying from New Zealand factories to a certain extent ” Mr Robinson said his union felt that importation of footwear was unnecessary.

“New Zealand factories can adequately meet the demand and keep up with the latest fashions.” he said. “There is no definite need for imported footwear in New Zealand.”
