British Press Criticism
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, March 7. The “Manchester Guardian’’ today strongly criticised Britain’s jamming of radio reception in Cyprus. “In Cyprus itself jamming will give the Athens broadcasts the attraction of forbidden fruit,” the newspaper said. “It will hardly stop anyone from throwing bombs. Instead it will enable the world to say that Britain’s case is too weak for her to counter vicious propaganda by rational means. “When Sir Anthony Eden and Mr Khrushchev meet they will have this in common—they are both jammers.’’ the “Manchester Guardian’’ said. The “Daily Mirror’’ accused the British Government of adopting a deadend policy for Cyprus. “Cyprus could be held for a time by all-out repression.’’ this mass circulation newspaper submitted, “but the jackboot is not our wear.’’ The “Daily Mirror’’ urged the British Government to make a fresh offer to the Cypriots on the disputed points between them.
