TROTTING EVENTS AT MOTUKARARA

SCOOT AND ZAGAR HAVE EASY WINS Both Scoot and Zagar, which were the respective favourites for the two trotting events at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting at Motukarara on Saturday, justified the support given them by winning in convincing style. Scoot, which had been narrowly beaten by Dan Derby at Geraldine the previous week, began best in .he Wairewa Handicap Trot, and was followed at the end of a furlong by Nikova, Irish Wit, Diamond Pete, and Taipo, with Quare Times, Pensioner, Pibroch, and Doll’s Pet following. Going to the half-mile, Scoot was two lengths clear of Nikova, Diamond Pete, Irish Wit, Malcolm, Humble Pie, and Taipo, which were in close order, ahead of Quare Tirfles, Jupiter, Pibroch, and Starwise. Scoot had increased his lead to three lengths at the straight entrance, and was followed into line by J’ixova, Irish Wit, Diamond Pete, Sheniara, Doll’s Pet, and Taipo. Although Irish Wit finished better than Nikova over the last furlong, he was still two lengths and a half from the winner at the post. Nikova battled on for third, two lengths back, with a similar margin to Diamond Pete. After a gap came Starwise, which made up considerable ground after Icing slow away, Shemara, Taipo, and Humble Pie. Lord Argyle broke and Modest interfered with several runners at the start, when he broke badly and veered across the track in front of them. Zagar, capably handled by J. H. Butterick, led throughout the Waihora Park Handicap Trot, and was not extended to hold off Greenstone, which enjoyed the run of the race behind the leader, by half a length. Corinthian was running on in third place three lengths back, with an-

other four lengths to the little fancied Kilcullen, which \.’as well clear of Floreate. Premium. Radiant Lady, Queen’s Coronet, Fa’marie, Fancora. and Laughlin’s Lass were next to finish. Floreate, Mount Lebanon, Laughlin’s Lass, and Capull all gave ground at the start. Zagar took up the role of pacemaker. and was followed past the stands by Greenstone, Francora. Radiant Lady, Kilcullen, and Shyanna, with Silver Casket at of the rest. With the exception of Francora, which

had drifted back a few places, the order remained the same at the half-mile. Zagar was still a and a half clear of Greenstone on t’.a home turn, with Radiant Lady and Kilcullen next, ahead of Corinthian, Floreate, and Premium. Greenstone was hard driven from the furlong, but found the task of overhauling Zagar, which was still travelling comfortably, beyond hi? '.
