RELICS OF PIONEER DAYS

Several interesting relics of the early settlement of Bank's Peninsula have come to light recently and are now included in the stock of an exclusive gift shop in Christchurch. They include two pewtpr plates dating from the period 1750-1800 which were brought to the Peninsula by an early settler, T. S. (Samuel) Johnston, and which bear the initials of their first owners G. and D. Johnston. W. H. Raworth, first school-teacher at Lyttelton and a passenger on the Cressey, is represented by two sepia drawings of Peninsula interest and finally there is a delightful low table of Peninsula totara knot which bears all the marks of being a pioneer effort to furnish the first home. In addition to these pieces of particular interest to Peninsula residents there is a varied stock of artistic and beautiful gifts and small items for the home. Gothic wrought-iron door and hearth furniture which sells at absurdly low prices has been a most popular line. The shop specialises in making lampshades to meet individual needs and as many of the materials used are imported direct they are quite exclusive.

But this is not all. The shop is run under the personal supervision of a qualified Interior Decorator who has trained overseas and who is available for advice on all problems of home decoration. The Colour Service, for a very reasonable fee, will provide a colour scheme for a single room or a complete home.

When next in town visit COLOUR AND DESIGN (INTERIORS) on the third floor of the C.M.L. Building (served by a lift and near the “StarSun”), in Cathedral square. —Advt.
